The first self-winding mechanism was invented for pocket watches in 1770 by Abraham-Louis Perrelet, but the first "self-winding", or "automatic", wristwatch was the invention of a British watch repairer named John Harwood in 1923. This type of watch allows for constant winding without special action from the wearer; it works by an eccentric weight, called a winding rotor, which rotates with the movement of the wearer's wrist. The back-and-forth motion of the winding rotor couples to a ratchet to automatically wind the mainspring. Self-winding watches can also be wound manually so they can be kept running when not worn or if the wearer's wrist motions are inadequate to keep the watch wound.

** Setting the time **
You will need to grasp the crown (button at the side) tightly and pull. You will be able to turn the crown/button to set the time. Once you have set the time you will need to press the crown/button firmly back towards the watch until you feel or hear a click.

** Winding your wrist watch **
Automatic self winding watches will run continuously and keep accurate time if worn everyday after the first hand-winding and if the wearer wrist movement is adequate to keep the watch fully rewound. If you only wear your automatic mechanical watch occasionally you will need to re-set and hand-wind your watch again.

Your self winding watch will need to be wound fully the first time you use it. Turn the winding crown (same button you set the time with) approximately 15 turns clockwise. Stop while you can still see slight space in the mainspring coil (to prevent over winding) and before you feel resistance. The mainspring is made to wind up fully once a day if needed. Once you finish winding the watch you will need to rock the watch back and forth to activate it. This watch runs on kinetic energy and movement is part of what keeps it working.

Because the mainspring is unwinding when the watch is not worn it will need to be wound some more every two to three days. A fully wound mainspring has approximately 27-30 hours of operation in it without being worn.
