Automatic wrist watch history:
**********************************
The first self-winding mechanism was invented for pocket watches in 1770 by Abraham-Louis Perrelet, but the first "self-winding", or "automatic", wristwatch was the invention of a British watch repairer named John Harwood in 1923. This type of watch allows for constant winding without special action from the wearer; it works by an eccentric weight, called a winding rotor, which rotates with the movement of the wearer's wrist. The back-and-forth motion of the winding rotor couples to a ratchet to automatically wind the mainspring. Self-winding watches can also be wound manually so they can be kept running when not worn or if the wearer's wrist motions are inadequate to keep the watch fully wound.
********************************************************************

Your automatic self winding watch will need to be wound fully the first time you use it. If you only wear your automatic mechanical watch occasionally you will need to reset and rewind your watch. The mainspring is made to wind up as needed, (after setting unused/no motion). This watch runs on kinetic energy and movement is part of what keeps it working.

** Setting the time **
You will need to grasp the crown (button at the side) tightly and pull. You will be able to turn the crown/button to set the time. Once you have set the time you will need to press the crown/button firmly back towards the watch until you feel or hear a click.

** Winding your wrist watch **
Turn the winding crown (same button you set the time with) approximately 15 turns clockwise. It is important to STOP before you feel resistance. Watch the mainspring located between the '1' and the watch face center. When loose the coils are relaxed into their outer area. At about 10 twists you will still see space between the coils. Around 15 twists or so the watch movement will be fully wound but each watch is a little different. You need to stop before you feel resistance, so that the mainspring will not become frozen due to winding it too tight. It is a good idea to observe the mainspring in action as you wind to get a feel for how much is just right. Once you finish winding the watch you will need to rock the watch back and forth to activate it.
